The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory of 40 islands and cays in the Atlantic Ocean, north of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, south-east of the Bahamas. The main island is Providenciales (colloquially Provo), the site of Providenciales International Airport (PLS), Grace Bay Beach, and the majority of the island's resort infrastructure. Direct flights from London Gatwick are operated by TUI and British Airways in the winter season (October–April); year-round connections are available via Miami, New York, or Charlotte.

The Columbus Passage, a deep-water channel between the Turks islands and the Caicos islands, is one of the Atlantic's most important marine migration corridors. Grand Turk — the political capital, 30 minutes by domestic flight east of Providenciales — has the island group's most accessible wall diving and the humpback whale corridor. North Caicos and Middle Caicos, connected by a causeway, are the most unspoiled of the major islands: fewer than 2,000 permanent residents, several of the Caribbean's most undisturbed beaches, and a flamingo population in the wetlands of Middle Caicos.

A private island off the north-west coast of Providenciales, accessible only by private boat. A resort on the quieter Long Bay Beach on the east coast of Providenciales — away from the Grace Bay concentration of hotels — in a building of contemporary Caribbean architecture with an ocean-to-pool design that makes the swimming pools feel like extensions of the sea. The shore club has the most sophisticated food and beverage programme on the island, with a rooftop restaurant and a beach club that regularly draws guests from the Grace Bay properties.

Grace Bay snorkelling

The barrier reef along Grace Bay — fifty metres from the beach in water two to five metres deep — is accessible without a boat and without a guide. A pair of fins and a mask from any of the beach operators opens the most accessible coral reef snorkelling in the Caribbean: the reef fish diversity is extraordinary given the proximity to shore, and Nassau grouper of considerable size inhabit the coral heads immediately offshore from the Grace Bay Club. Early morning (before 9am) and late afternoon are the times when the fish are most active.

Humpback whale boat trip from Grand Turk

The Columbus Passage between Grand Turk and South Caicos is one of the Atlantic's most important humpback whale migration corridors from January through April. Grand Turk Diving operates responsible whale-watching trips from Grand Turk's west coast, with encounters at close range as the whales transit the passage. Grand Turk itself (the political capital, population 4,000) has the most dramatic wall diving in the islands: a sheer reef wall dropping from 7 metres to over 600 metres, accessible on a fifteen-minute boat ride from the pier.

Private day boat to uninhabited cays

The uninhabited cays surrounding Providenciales — Little Water Cay (home to the rock iguana population), Iguana Island, and the sandbars of the Caicos Bank — are accessible by private day charter from the Providenciales marinas. A full day aboard includes snorkelling stops at the healthiest reef sections, a conch salad prepared by the captain on the boat using freshly caught conch (still legal and plentiful in the Caicos Bank), and the afternoon return through the protected waters of the Caicos Bank. The best day out in the island group.

Conch Farm tour and lunch at Da Conch Shack

The Turks and Caicos Conch Farm on Providenciales is the world's only commercial conch aquaculture operation — a conservation-oriented farm that raises queen conch from eggs to adult in managed tanks, addressing the population decline caused by commercial harvesting across the Caribbean. A guided tour takes ninety minutes. Lunch following at Da Conch Shack — a landmark beach shack on the north shore that has been serving cracked conch, conch salad, and conch fritters since 1999 — completes the Turks and Caicos conch education in the most satisfying possible way.

What to Eat and Drink

The queen conch — a large marine mollusk that forms the backbone of Turks and Caicos cuisine — appears in every form: cracked (tenderised, breaded, and fried), in salad (raw, tossed with lime, onion, tomato, and Scotch bonnet), as fritters, and in chowder. The conch salad made fresh on a day boat from a conch caught an hour earlier is one of the Caribbean's great beach foods. Da Conch Shack on the north shore of Providenciales is the definitive address.

The resort restaurants — particularly Parallel23 at the Shore Club and the Lotus at COMO Parrot Cay — maintain standards considerably above the usual Caribbean resort level. Kalooki's Bar and Grill at Grace Bay is the most atmospheric local restaurant: open-air, feet-in-the-sand, grilled fish and cold Turk's Head lager (the local beer, brewed on the island since 2012) at prices that the resort properties do not approach.
