Grenada is the Spice Island — the name derives from the nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, and clove plantations that have covered the island since the 17th century, making it the world's second-largest nutmeg producer after Indonesia. The scent of nutmeg on the air at the Gouyave processing station, where almost the entire island's harvest arrives by truck and is sorted by hand, is one of the most distinctive sensory experiences in the Caribbean.

Grand Anse Beach — a three-kilometre arc of white sand on the south-west coast — is among the finest beaches in the Caribbean and receives a fraction of the visitors that Barbados's Platinum Coast or St Lucia's Pigeon Island attract. Grenada is the southernmost of the Windward Islands, 160 kilometres north of Trinidad and 90 kilometres south-west of St Vincent. Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) at Point Salines receives inter-Caribbean connections from Barbados (45 minutes), Trinidad (30 minutes), and Antigua (1 hour 15 minutes). No direct UK flights operate; the most convenient route from London is via Barbados (British Airways Heathrow–Bridgetown, 8.5 hours, then LIAT or InterCaribbean to Grenada, 45 minutes).

The island has a mountainous interior of rainforest rising to 840 metres at Mount Saint Catherine — the Grand Etang National Park protects the volcanic lakes and waterfalls of the interior that are accessible by trail. The south coast (Grand Anse, L'Anse aux Épines, True Blue Bay) is the principal resort area; the north and east coasts are quieter and less developed, with the spice and cocoa estates that produce the island's agricultural identity.

Thirty suites in a quiet bay on the south-west coast — a boutique property of considerable elegance, with a restaurant (Rhodes Restaurant at Calabash, named for the celebrity chef Gary Rhodes) that was for many years the finest in Grenada, and a pool-suite product on a sheltered beach that attracts the guests who find Grand Anse too busy. Calabash is the most personal of the major Grenada properties: smaller, quieter, and with a management style that treats guests as members of a house party.

True Blue, south-east

A boutique property on a small peninsula above True Blue Bay, with a marina, a water sports programme of exceptional variety (windsurfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddleboarding from the hotel's own beach), and a culinary programme built around Grenada's own spice and chocolate production. True Blue Bay is the most activities-oriented property on the island; the Infinity dive centre operating from the hotel is Grenada's most reputable operator for the underwater sculpture park.

Couples for whom activities — diving the sculpture park, kitesurfing, and the chocolate and spice cultural programme — are as important as the beach.

Pink Gin Beach, south

The Sandals group's Grenada flagship: 226 rooms and suites above Pink Gin Beach on the south coast, offering the most comprehensive all-inclusive programme on the island with fourteen restaurants, eight bars, a water sports centre, and a spa. Sandals LaSource is not the most individual or most personal property in this list — the chain's model is a specific proposition — but it delivers that proposition more consistently in Grenada than on several other islands, and Pink Gin Beach is a genuinely excellent beach.

Silversands Grenada

Grand Anse Beach

The most design-forward property on Grand Anse Beach: forty-three suites, pool villas, and an infinity pool of extraordinary length above the beach, designed with a minimalist contemporary aesthetic unusual in the Caribbean. The Silversands opened in 2019 to immediate acclaim for its architecture; the Grenadian experience it delivers is deliberately contemporary rather than traditionally Caribbean, which is either a distinction or a limitation depending on what you came for.

Underwater sculpture park snorkelling

The Jason deCaires Taylor Underwater Sculpture Park at Molinere Bay — accessible by snorkel from the beach or by dinghy from the True Blue Bay dive centre — is the most memorable single experience in Grenada and unique in the Caribbean. The 65 life-size figures installed between 2006 and 2009 are now encrusted with coral growth and inhabited by an extraordinary density of fish and marine invertebrates; the figures visible through three metres of clear Caribbean water have an other-worldly quality that no photograph fully prepares a visitor for.

Belmont Estate chocolate and spice tour

The Belmont Estate in the north of the island — 400 acres of organic cocoa, nutmeg, and vegetable cultivation, in operation since the 17th century — offers the most complete agricultural tourism experience in the Caribbean. A full-day tour covers the cocoa fermentation and drying process, the stone-grinding of raw cacao into drinking chocolate, and a lunch of Grenadian cooking prepared from the estate's own ingredients. The estate also operates a model of the traditional Grenadian sugar mill. The Grenada Chocolate Company's visitor centre at Hermitage Estate is the complementary stop.

Grand Etang rainforest

The Grand Etang National Park in the volcanic interior of the island protects a lake (the crater lake of an extinct volcano) surrounded by montane rainforest of remarkable bird diversity. The mona monkeys (imported from West Africa in the 17th century, now established as a wild population) are habituated to visitors along the main trail; the Morne Delice waterfall and the Seven Sisters Falls (a thirty-minute hike from the main road) are the most dramatic water features in the park. The park is cool, quiet, and completely different from the beach coast thirty minutes below.

Whale and dolphin watching

Grenada's offshore waters are among the Caribbean's most productive for cetacean sightings: sperm whales (feeding year-round in the deep water of the Grenada Passage), spinner dolphins, and the occasional humpback (January through March) are all sighted from boat trips departing True Blue Bay marina. The Eco-Dive and Eco-Trek operators both run responsible whale-watching programmes; the sperm whale encounters — pods of three to five whales logging at the surface — occur at close range on calm days with a frequency that exceeds expectations.

What to Eat and Drink

Oil-down, spiced cocoa, and the rum that smells of the nutmeg it sits beside.

The Grenadian national dish is oil-down: a slow-cooked stew of breadfruit, callaloo greens, salt meat (typically pork or salt fish), and coconut milk, cooked in a single large pot until the coconut milk has been fully absorbed and the breadfruit takes on a golden colour from the turmeric. The dish requires patience and a large group to justify making — it is the island's communal food and the version at the Spice Island Beach Resort's restaurant (made in their kitchen for guests who request it in advance) is the most accessible interpretation.

The nutmeg ice cream and nutmeg syrup (a reduction of the fruit of the nutmeg, which is itself edible and tastes of sweet, spiced apricot) are the most specific Grenadian food experiences. The Grenada Chocolate Company's single-origin dark bars, made from Trinitario cacao grown on the island, win international blind-tasting competitions against Belgian and Swiss competition. The River Antoine Rum is the most direct expression of traditional Caribbean rum production: 90-proof white rum from a water-powered 1785 distillery, available only at the distillery itself.

The Spice Island Beach Resort is the correct base: family-operated, warm, and with the beach position that the Silversands' contemporary architecture cannot replicate for warmth of welcome. Three nights at the Spice Island, a day trip to Belmont Estate and the sculpture park, and the Grand Etang morning is the Grenada week that earns the longer connection through Barbados.
